I anticipated for this series quite a bit because I’m fond of Dayo Wong & his comedy acting. They’re just gold! It was also set in the past which I was craving for. The storyline was pretty interesting and as it progressed I became more excited over each download completion (or even when I watched it on TV) Too lazy to do screencaps. Will do them in the future LOL
Main cast: Dayo Wong, Lam Ka Wah, Cecilia Yip, Benz Hui, Viven Yeo etc
Genre: Period comedy
Episodes: 21
Theme song: “佚名” by Dayo Wong
Synopsis
With the support of the head of the Police Authority, Guangzhou’s top villain Ho Kei-Kin (Dayo Wong) has been riding roughshod over everyone around him. He is so manipulative that he has explored every possible means in his fight for a house with the buck-toothed owner Ling Yuk Tsui (Cecilia Yip). Tsui is happy to have met the upright and honorable Wong Fei Hung (Lam Kar Wah). The pair quickly falls in love and even feels ready for marriage. Interested in stirring up trouble, Kin tries to recruit more students for his kung-fu school by portraying himself as the hero who has defeated one of the Ten Tigers of Guangdong Wong Kei-Ying. For the sake of fairness, Hung is resolved to have a contest with Kin. Unfortunately, Kin manages to make Hung give in with the help of the ancestral tablet of his late father. Thinking that he is a hopeless coward, Tsui decides to break off her engagement to Hung. Kin quickly grabs the chance and begins to woo Tsui. Tsui agrees to transfer her house to Kin after much persuasion from him. Kin shows his true colors as soon as he has secured the property. Tsui is left homeless and has to put up at Po Chi Lam, the martial arts club set up by Hung. Kin has lost his power and soon becomes an object of contempt and hatred. With nowhere else to go, he decides to turn to Hung and asks to be his apprentice. Hung has tried his best to bring out the human side of Kin, for which he has received a lot of criticism from others. Despite Hung’s support, Kin does not repent and behaves even worse than before, leaving Po Chi Lam in a state of total chaos…
My Thoughts
I thought the storyline was nice simple and very engaging. A villian & buck tooth & kung fu master together? Now that’s a first. As the drama continued I (at first) thought the storyline would drag on abit and become boring but I was wrong. I found it hilarious when Dayo started courting Tsui, his expressions was priceless! Also, I thought Tsui was a very lovable character despite her teeth.
The acting itself I thought should be applauded. Dayo did a excellent job as the villian and really persuaded the audience to hate him (I know I did) As for Lam Kar Wah, I don’t really like him, I think he was a bit stiff but in some scenes eg crying ones he did a pretty good job in it. Mm Cecilia is a great actress! She does comedy + serious roles really well and her buck tooth teeth cracked me up everytime I saw it. Vivien has improved a far bit since the last time I saw her act, I’m starting to like her more and more now. Benz Hui is such a great veteran! I found it a loss he didn’t win Best Supporting Actor this year, oh well maybe next year. But without him, I don’t think it would receive high ratings. When Dayo always threatened to kill him, his expressions was HALARIOUS!
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR REST OF PARAGRAPH. I was disspointed when Tsui front two buck tooth got knocked out and then she got replaced with normal teeth. I wanted to see her as buck tooth for the rest of the series! She got normal teeth from around episode 10 upwards. ALSO when Viven Yeo got healed from her sickness just because Dayo acting as that monk person, I thought it was fake how she got healed so quickly SPOILERS ENDS HERE :D
I thought the ending was really dissapointing. It looked rushed and very unorganized. It didn’t show who ended up with who or whether Tsui and Kei-Kin got together. The part in the final minute where Dayo said what’s wrong with buck teeth and let a buck teeth woman win a pagent was WTF? No, I don’t have anything against buck toothness but that part was just so random O_O Also, it didn’t really show whether Viven lived happily ever after and become closer to her sister or not. However, the final few episodes (exc ending) was really interesting. It was cool how Kei Kin suddenly turned ever again. The first couple of episodes could have been improved but other than that this series was pretty good :D
Overall
A little bit over 8 out of 10. Ending was crap and the beginning was a tad boring but it progressed nicely. Points for getting a interesting plot.
I LOOOVED dAYO IN THIS!! Dayo doesnt get recognized enuff and i hate that! GOOO DAYYO
