No, the english subs has not been released yet (as I type this anyway) so I’ve been watching the Chinese subs from my cousin :D Lots of hype over this drama so we’ll see how it goes…
Code Blue is a new summer drama with Tomohisa Yamashita, and two rising young actresses Yui Aragaki and Erika Toda. The concept is based on Japan’s proposal for an emergency medical service using helicopters to quickly reach those in need. A special bill was passed in June 2007 that should foster widespread adoption of the system. Yamashita stars as a young doctor-in-training, working under the guidance of an experienced “flight doctor” (Toshiro Yanagiba). Some scenes will be filmed with a real helicopter, adding to the show’s tension.
{I am yet to add screencaps once I reach my computer}
Code Blue reminded me of two dramas from TVB – Healing Hands and Always Ready. Why? Healing hands revolved around the hospital and saving people’s lives and Always Ready was about using helicopter to reach patients stranded and relationships that go along with that. Code Blue is the drama that incorprates all these elements.
The cast, it’s awesome. I’ve never been a massive fan of Yamapi but I do really like the female casts and from the looks of the first episode, I believe the drama will focus more on Yamapi’s character, Kousaku and Gakki’s, Megumi. Kousaku really gives off the “cool aura” and likes to be independent and realistic and Megumi is the character that doesn’t really seem to work under pressure and seems a bit freaked out from her job. Erika Toda’s character, Mihoku, really cares for her patients and really wants to perform and let others know what she is capable of. Asari Yosuke’s character, Kazuo is like a relief to this tense, life and death drama and at the start he acted like a bit of a goofy character but as the episode goes on, you can really see his enthuasiasm and care for his job.
From the looks of it, each episode will probably feature more dangers, more life and death, more feelings, more struggles, more friendship and definetely more of an insight towards each character. Almost the whole of the episode was tense, operations occuring every 10 minutes into this episode and personally, I thought there would be more blood and guts but they kept that amount to a minimum (except for the part where a guy got his hand stuck in a machine) and did a decent job of emphasising each patient’s dangers.
This episode mainly showed three patients and how each of the four new flight doctor handles it.
Patient 1 – Elderly woman whose life is hanging from a cliff and has no relatives that will come see her. Mihoku gets really angry at this woman’s family and why they don’t care whether she’s alive or not.
Patient 2 – 15 year old girl whose arm have to get chopped off. Kazuo develops a friendly doctor – patient relationship and is deeply saddened performing the operation and how her life will turn out.
Patient 3 – 19 year old guy whose arm is caught in a machine. This part really showed Kousaku calm and collected personality by how he reacted and performed during that crisis point.
Although sometimes it can get a bit confusing with the medical terms it was still all good :D Also, I hate Yamapi’s hair in this. It’s like curly…. Anddd I like how each of them are supposed to be “competing” against each other, you know, for the one that becomes more well known and succeed better but through this (they rarely communicate, or communicate through staring each other) they seem to become closer.
I’m enjoying Code Blue. It’s not over the top and exaggerated and so far, I really love each character. I’d probably rate it 8 out of 10 from the first episode but I will definetely be continuing to watch this mainly cause I enjoy hospital dramas and ‘Doctor Heli’ in which I thought from a glance said ‘Doctor Hell’.
P.S, I found the ending strong yet corny. “I will become a famous doctor” – Kousaku + curly hair where light is shining on his face.
WTFHJDLAD; speedy Chinese subbers DDDD:. But seriously, the raw popped up on D-addicts yesterday how fast can they be?
I really want to see this because of Erika and Gakki (screw Yamapi), OH MAN, MUST SEE REAL SHOTS IN HELICOPTERS! I WONDER HOW -EXCITING- THEY ARE.
And shit, first ep ratings of 20+
If Chinese subbers are fast do a Maou first impression :3
HAHAH! You ain’t seen fast till you’ve seen SoShi Subs! For a daily drama release they’re only 3 episode behind the raw! BWAHHA. But I want to see this drama. Maybe it was becuas Kurosagi changed my POV on Yamapi, but it seems pretty intersting! can’t wait for subs now!
No, you must watch it to see his ahjuma perm!!!!!!1111111eleven
HAHA! Trust me when I say I think I’ve seen enough ahjumma perms! LMFAO. Meh, idk.
His hair is ugh. Yuck. I guess the subbers spent the whole night doing it, pretty dedicated eh. I’m planning to watch Maou so hopefully I’ll get the first impressions done asap.
I’ve alredy seen half of maou but I dont last a long time without subs. So I got lost halfway through and died. Toma seems to scream a hell lot.
Subs for ep 1 by Querbeet came out *flails*
And Maou raw came out yesterday :D
hey :) tks for the great review! haha but the “i’ll become a famous doctor” part, well i watched another version of english Subs by Querbeet and it was translated as “an excellent doctor” which i prefer alot more XD
I’ve only seen up to the fifth episode (from six onwards the subbed videos don’t work and there’s no way I’ll understand anything from raw), but I’m really liking it so far. Then again, I like those kind of dramas. I’ve liked both Toda Erika and Yamashita since Nobuta, as actors. The girl who plays Megumi is rather good, too.
Maybe one of the reasons I’m enjoying this drama so much is that it’s more western – as much as I love Japanese doramas, a lot of the time they’re too exaggerated and the actors act like manga characters instead of real people, or it gets too corny, and it bothers me. Here I don’t get that feeling. I like the fact that they focus more on the human and emotion part rather than just shock you with the blood and gore. I like how they build the characters- a bit streotypical, but it works well. I like the whole idea of flight doctors, too ^__^
As for the actors themselves:
Yamashita: I’m not a fan of him, though I think he’s a good actor, but here I’m really impressed. He portrays Kosaku really well, and it helps that I have a thing for the handsome, perfect emotionless types ^__^ I actually like his hair (though I seem to be the only one) – this is the first time I found myself thinking that maybe he IS good looking. I’ve never been able to see the attraction before.
Erika: I’ve always enjoyed her acting, and it’s the same here. I really get her character; competitive- just as Kosaku, actually, for all she tells him he’s awful, they think the same, she just expresses it differently. Yet she’s – softer, maybe? She’s able to care more, she panics, and yes, she’s more human, too.
Megumi: I like this character, too, even though she seems too perfect at times, which kinda bothers me. Perfect recall of everything, has hunches that proves correct, is caring and extra nice, timid but can be fierce when she believes in something, screws up under pressure at first but then redeems herself over and over – she’s the most stereotypical, except maybe Kazuo, and she irks me a little because of it, though I still like her. On a side note, the actress is really pretty, too.
Kazuo: he really annoys me. I realize he’s supposed to be the comic relief, the underdog that starts by getting under everyone’s feet but in the end proves them wrong and is better than everyone. This doesn’t happen in real life. The incompetent doctor gets kicks out, he doesn’t get better. Someone stupid enough to touch someone while they’re shocking him back to life shouldn’t be a doctor. He annoys me with the lies he tells his mother, with the lies he tells others, with the lies he tells himself, with his empty braggery and bravado. And the fact the he somehow, despite all that, manages to do things others can’t by being a bumbling idiot is the most stereotypical, and annoys me greatly. I hope he leaves, or at least I hope he’ll never set foot at the helicopter, even though I know he will and be great at it, too, and that’s what annoys me most of all.
I like the rest of the cast, except the hospital manager or whatever he is, the old, smiling one that pops up in random places to give words of wisdom, cheer people up and so on. There’s one of him in almost every drama and I really hate that kind of character. What are you, Dumbledore?
I’ll probably give this drama an eight or a nine, at this point. Can’t wait to see the next episode ^__^
